Electric car replacement: will you get an EV back?

Published · Last updated

If you drive an EV, the like-for-like principle points to an electric replacement — your home charging setup, running-cost expectations and daily routine are built around electric driving, and a petrol car does not replace them. EV hire supply is real but thinner than petrol supply, so the practical answer is: usually yes for mainstream EVs, with sourcing time for less common ones.

What replacement car will I get if I drive an EV?

You drive Realistic supply Our review
Model 3 / mainstream EV saloon Tesla Model 3 — the default EV replacement Model 3 review
EV hatch (MG4, ID.3, e-208, Leaf) An equivalent EV hatchback
EV SUV (Model Y, Enyaq, Ariya, EV6) An equivalent electric SUV
Uncommon EVs Nearest equivalent EV while a closer match is sourced

The legacy GTA group tables are organised around engine size and do not band EVs by fuel; EV matching runs on size, range and market-position equivalence in practice.

Which models count as like-for-like for an EV?

An EV of comparable size, usable range and charging capability: a Model 3 driver matched to a comparable-range EV saloon, an MG4 driver to an equivalent EV hatch. Range parity matters — a short-range city EV is not a match for a long-range car you commute in.

What will I not be given?

You should not be defaulted to a petrol or diesel car simply because it is easier for the fleet — if you drive electric, say at first contact that the replacement must be electric. Charging costs during the hire and any public-charging arrangements should be clarified when the hire is set up; how hire charges themselves are recovered is a claim question rather than a vehicle question.

Am I eligible for an EV replacement?

If the accident was non-fault and you need the car, the like-for-like principle covers fuel type as part of equivalence — see our eligibility page. Check your own case: Check your eligibility — Nationwide Accident Hire (opens external site) (commercial partner link).
