Toyota Corolla credit hire review
Published · Last updated
The Corolla is the car fleets choose when the duty cycle is hardest. It is the backbone of UK taxi and private-hire replacement supply and an increasingly common family-car replacement, because its self-charging hybrid drivetrain was engineered for precisely the stop-start, high-hours work hire duty imposes. The public record backs the choice: What Car?'s reliability survey scores the current Corolla 96.5%, one of the strongest results of any car on sale.

Is the Toyota Corolla a good credit hire car?
Yes — on the evidence, one of the best. What Car?'s reliability survey places the current Corolla seventh out of 26 family cars on a 96.5% score, with Toyota the fourth most reliable of 30 manufacturers at 96.1%. The same survey ranks the Corolla among the most dependable hybrids of any kind. In town the hybrid drivetrain is smooth and near-silent; its one character flaw, noted consistently by the UK motoring press, is engine drone under hard acceleration from the CVT-style transmission.
What spec of Corolla will I be given?
Fleet cars are overwhelmingly Icon or Design trim with the 1.8 hybrid: touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, reversing camera, automatic gearbox as standard (every Corolla is an automatic hybrid), and the full Toyota Safety Sense package including adaptive cruise control. Private-hire fleets favour the Touring Sports estate for its luggage capacity.
What is the Corolla like at high mileage?
This is the Corolla's strongest suit, and the reason the private-hire trade adopted it as the natural successor to the Prius. What Car?'s used-car reliability data found only 12% of owners reporting any fault, concentrated in the 12-volt battery, bodywork and sat-nav/infotainment — not the hybrid drivetrain — with over half of repairs completed within a day, 82% covered under warranty and out-of-warranty jobs typically under £200. DVSA-sourced recall records for the current car list three campaigns: an eCall emergency-call software update, a brake-pedal bracket bolt check, and inspection or replacement of the high-pressure fuel pump on affected engine variants. All are addressed free of charge by Toyota dealers, and a car's recall status can be checked against its registration on the government recall checker.
What does the Corolla cost to run?
For the hirer: fuel only, and very little of it. Toyota's published WLTP figures put the 1.8 hybrid around 60mpg combined, and the car is at its most efficient in exactly the urban running that dominates hire use, where the drivetrain spends much of its time on electric power. Fleet-side, Toyota's service-activated warranty cover extends up to 10 years or 100,000 miles, which keeps hire cars within manufacturer cover for their whole working life.
